Tin

Tin is soft metal with a silvery-white color, which is resistant against oxidation. Due to these properties, is widely used as a protective coating. It is the main component of babbits, solders, bronzes, printing alloys, etc.

The tin comes according to GOST 860-75 and it is divided into two classes:

High category:

  • OVСh (very high frequencies) -000 (Sn (stannum) content not less than 99.999%) for semiconductor equipment, etc.;

  • 01 PCh(intermediate frequency)  (Sn content not less than 99,915%) — for tinning canning tin, etc.;

     

  • 01 (Sn content not less than 99.9%) — for the production of sheet metal, for electrical purposes, etc.;

  • 02 (Sn content not less than 99,565%), — for the manufacture of babbits, alloys, solders and tin powder, pipes, foil, tinning cooking and eating utensils in pigs from 24 to 26 kg.

The first category:

  • 03 (98,48% Sn and 1% Pb) — for the manufacture of solders and salts in ingots 24-26kg;

  • 04 (96,43% Sn and 3% Pb) — for the manufacture of solders, babbits and alloys, modification of grey cast iron ingots — 24-26kg.

 

Solders

Solders are filler metals (alloys) which are capable in the molten state to fill the gap between the soldered products as a result of hardening to form a durable sealed connection.

Grades, chemical composition, properties and purpose of the solders set forth in GOST 21930-76.

Solders are delivered in the form of round wire, ribbon, triangular, round bars, round tubes filled with flux and powder according to GOST 21931-76.

Some types of solders:

  • POS — 90 — for tinning and soldering of the inner seams of food utensils and medical equipment;

  • POSSu 4-4 — for tinning and soldering in the automotive industry.

 

Babbit

Babbit is the oldest (since 1839.) and widely used to date antifriction fusible ductile heterogeneous alloys based on tin and lead with harder inclusions (copper, antimony, nickel, etc.). Used for the manufacture of bearings. Plastic base (tin, lead) provides for uniform adhesion and workability of bearing to the shaft, and solids serve him immediate support while maintaining low friction and wear.

Chemical composition, grades of babbits comply with:

  • tin and lead — GOST 1320-74

  • calcium — GOST 1209-78.
