Pipes

Pipe is a hollow cylindrical or profiled product having a large compared with the section length. With a relatively small mass of the pipe has a greater moment of resistance to bending and twisting.

According to the method of production of steel pipe are divided into:

  • SEAMLESS pipes according to GOST 8731, GOST 8732, GOST 8733, GOST 8734 (outer pipe diameter of 1-820 mm, special purpose — 1420 mm), made from ingots and tube billets by extrusion or rolling;

  • WELDED pipes according to GOST 10704, GOST 10705, GOST 10707, GOST 3262, GOST 8639, GOST 8645, GOST 8642 (outer pipe diameter 8-1620mm, special purpose — up to 2500mm and more) from sheet and strip steel with preliminary forming on presses or molding mills;

  • CAST pipes (outer pipe diameter 50-1000 mm) which are obtained on the acting pipe-casting machines.

 

Steel pipes are divided into 6 classes:

  • Pipes of the 1st and 2nd class are made of carbon steel:

    • steel pipes of the 1st class (standard pipes and gas pipes) are used in cases where no special requirements, for example in the construction of scaffolding, fences, supports, cable, irrigation systems, and localized distribution and supply of gaseous and liquid substances;

    • pipes of the 2nd class are used in main pipelines of high and low pressure for gas supply, oil and water, petrochemical products, fuel;

  • Steel pipes of the 3rd class are used in systems operating under pressure and at high temperatures, for example in the chemical and food industry, nuclear engineering, pipelines, petroleum cracking, furnaces, boilers, etc.;

  • Steel pipes of the 4th class are designed for the exploration and exploitation of oil fields, they are used as drill pipe, casing and auxiliary pipes.

  • Steel pipes of the 5th class (structural) are used in the manufacture of transport equipment (automobile, railway, etc.), steel structures (bridge cranes, masts, derricks, support) as elements of furniture, etc.

  • Steel pipes of the 6th class are used in mechanical engineering for the manufacture of cylinders and pistons for pumps, bearing rings, shafts and other machine parts, tanks, working under pressure.

 

Steel pipes are divided into pipes of small external diameter (up to 114 mm), medium (114-480 mm) and large (480-2500 mm and more).

 

WATER AND GAS STEEL PIPES, GOST 3262-75

The standard applies to non-galvanized and galvanized welded steel pipe used for water and gas pipelines, as well as for parts of water and gas structures.

Galvanized pipes are heavier than non-galvanized to 3%.

According the accuracy of manufacturing, pipes are produced:

  • Normal accuracy;
  • Increased accuracy (P).


ELECTRICALLY WELDED STRAIGHT-LINE-SEAM STEEL PIPES, GOST 10704-91

The standard establishes the range electrically welded steel pipes, outside diameter from 10 up to 1420mm, inclusive.

The length of the pipe manufacture:

  • random length:
    • with the diameter up to 30 mm — not less than 2 m;
    • when a diameter of over 30 mm up to 70 mm — not less than 3 m;
    • with diameter over 70 up to 152 mm — not less than 5 m.
  • measuring length:

    • with the diameter up to 70 mm — from 5 to 9 m;
    • with diameter over 70 up to 219 mm — from 6 to 9 m;
    • when a diameter of over 219 to 426 mm — from 10 to 12 m.
  • multiple lengths:

    • a multiplicity of no less than 250 mm and not greater than the lower limit of the measuring pipes.

 

ELECTRICALLY WELDED STRAIGHT-LINE-SEAM STEEL PIPES  GOST 10705-80

The standard applies to electrically welded steel pipes with a diameter from 10 to 530mm from carbon and low-alloy steel used for pipelines and constructions for various purposes.

Group of pipes:

  • A – with standard mechanical properties;

  • B – with standard chemical composition;

  • V – with standard mechanical properties and chemical composition;

  • D – standard hydraulic test pressure.

Pipes are produced heat-treated, hot-reduced and without heat treatment.

ELECTRICALLY WELDED STRAIGHT-LINE-SEAM STEEL PIPES GOST 10706-76

The standard applies to electrically welded straight-line-seam steel pipes of general purpose with diameter from 426 to 1620 mm.

The standard establishes more stringent requirements for toughness of the base metal, transverse joints, strengthen internal seam, the chamfered end of the pipe.

Pipes made from steel grades ST2, ST3 of all degrees of deoxidation, and also from alloyed steel, the carbon equivalent which does not exceed 0,48%.

SEAMLESS HOT-DEFORMED STEEL PIPES GOST 8731-87

The standard applies to steel seamless hot-deformed pipes of carbon, low-alloy, and alloy steel for pipelines, structures, machine parts and other technical purposes.

Pipes are made from ingots, are not allowed to apply for the transport of harmful substances (I, II, III classes), explosive and flammable substances, as well as steam and hot water.

SEAMLESS HOT-DEFORMED STEEL PIPES GOST 8732-78

The standard applies to seamless hot-deformed steel pipes for general purposes, manufactured from the outside diameter, wall thickness and length.

The standard establishes the range of seamless steel pipes, outer diameter of 25 to 530mm inclusive.

WELDED STEEL PIPES FOR MAIN GAS AND OIL PIPELINES GOST 20295-85

The standard applies to steel straight-line-seam welded and spirally welded pipes with a diameter of 159-820 mm, used for building main gas and oil pipelines, petroleum product, technological and field pipelines.

Three types of pipes:

  • 1 – straight-line-seam pipes with diameter 159-426mm made by contact welding currents of high frequency;

  • 2 – spirally pipes with a diameter 159-820мм made using electric arc welding;

  • 3 – straight-line-seam pipes with diameter of 530-820мм made by the method of electric arc welding.

Depending on the mechanical properties of the pipe produce the following strength classes: К34, К38, K42, K50, K52, K55, K60.

Pipes are manufactured in length from 10.6 to 11.6 m.

STEEL PROFILE PIPES GOST 13663-86

The standard applies to profile hot, cold, electric and electric-welded cold-deformed pipes of general purpose made from carbon steel.

Pipes made from steel have following grades:

  • ST2SP, ST2PS, ST2KP, ST4SP, ST4PS, ST4KP  GOST 380;

  • 10, 10PS, 20, 35, 45, 08KP GOST 1050-88.

SQUARE STEEL PIPES GOST 8639-82

The standard applies to steel seamless hot-rolled, cold-drawn and welded square pipes..

Pipes are manufactured:

  • seamless hot-rolled and cold-drawn;

  • welded – non-dragged and dragged.

 

RECTANGULAR STEEL PIPES GOST 8645-68

The standard applies to steel seamless hot-rolled, cold-drawn and electric rectangular pipes.

 

Pipes are manufactured:

  • seamless hot-rolled and cold-drawn;

  • electrically welded.

***The degree of oxidation is determined by the content of silicon (Si) in this steel. According to the degree of deoxidation of carbon steel of ordinary quality are divided into:

quiet (SP) — not less than 0.12 % (Si)

balanced (SS) — 0.07-0.12 % (Si)

boiling (KP) is not more than 0.07 % (Si)
